How to Change Root Password on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9

Each user is given a username and password whether it’s a normal user or root. The username and password is used to login to the system. It is recommended to change password often because of a security point of view. It is also important that you have a strong password that is not breakable.

Open the terminal from the activities menu. Log in with the root account by executing the command.

su -

Provide the root password and press the <Enter> key.

Type the following command and press the <Enter> key.

passwd

Submit a new password twice for confirmation.

When you get the message “all authentication tokens updated successfully”, that means the password has been successfully changed.
